Dr. Phil McGraw reports that research from studies of over 1,000 highly successful people found six common denominators in every single winner:
1. VISION: They could tell you in great detail what they wanted and where they were going. They could see, smell, taste, feel what success would be like when they got it. They saw the future.
2. STRATEGY: They had a plan....not. There is myth that the 1953 graduating class of Yale University was asked how many had a written plan for their life, and if so, what is it. Less than 5% had a written plan with a time line. Those 5% were followed for over 20 years and tracked on several dimensions. The 5% who had a plan accumulated more wealth than the remaining 95% combined.
Unfortunately, this study on the Class of 1953 never happened. Research Associate Beverly Waters at Yale University reports that a recent outbreak of articles citing the study in publications as diverse as Dental Economics and Success magazines prompted her to undertake an exhaustive search of Yale alumni archives -- where she found no evidence that such a study had ever been conducted. Says Waters, "We are quite confident that the 'study' did not take place. We suspect it is a myth."
3. PRIORITIES: They knew when to say “no” and when to say “yes” in order to stay on the path to their goals.
4. PASSION: They were excited, they couldn't wait to get up in the morning. Their visions held deep meaning for them.
5. ENERGY: They took care of themselves both physically and emotionally. They led a healthy lifestyle, exercising and eating well, and did not stay in relationships that were draining. They stayed energized so that they could fulfill their dreams.
6. PEOPLE: They had a nucleus of people around them who were excited for them and were invested in their success. Not one single person made it alone. People bonded with the passion, it was infectious.
