In a nation more polarized than ever, there is one thing we can all agree on---our government is broken.
A recent Gallap poll revealed that a record-high 88% of Americans are dissatisfied with the way the country is being governed. More specifically, American's confidence in the people who run for or serve in office is also at a historic new low.
In his new book, LEADOCRACY: Hiring More Great Leaders into Government, Geoff Smart argues that the only way to fix our problems is to get the right who into governement. A government is only as good as who is in it, and the United States has a huge untapped resource of great leaders in the private sector. The challenge is for some of these business leaders to commit to two years of government service, and use their skills to tackle our country's problems...just like Ben Franklin did many years ago.
"Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes." Peter Drucker
"LEADOCRACY" means "government by society's greatest leaders." Leaders like Governors Jack Markell (D-DE), Rick Snyder (R-MI) and Mitch Daniels (R-IN) who are working on solutions to solving our leadership crisis.
Government leadership is challenging and worthwhile. Governor Rick Snyder of Michigan said so: "It has been the best leadership adventure in terms of the most challenging and the most rewarding. It's been the experience of a lifetime."
Here are three reasons leaders should serve:
1. Challenge and Learning: A leadership role in government is a new challenge, and an opportunity to use and grow your leadership skills.
2. Meaning and Worthwhile Goals: A great private sector leader in government, using best practices of leadership, can make a difference and improve the quality of life for a society.
3. Variety of Relationships: In government, you interact with an amazing range of people---you build relationships, help them in ways that only you can, and become part of a broader community that is making people's lives better.
One hundred percent of the profits from LEADOCRACY will be donated to The Leaders Initiative (TLI), a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to identify, develop and deploy society's greatest leaders into government.
